MERIS on ENVISAT

Question 1

Into what general category of EOS does the instrument fall?

Imaging multi-spectral radiometers (vis/IR)

Question 2

What capture technology is used?

Pushbroom

Question 3

Is the sensor active or passive?

Passive

Question 4

At what wavelength(s) does the sensor function?

390 nm to 1040 nm

Question 5

What resolution does the sensor have – temporal and spatial?

Temporal

MERIS's 68° field of view allows global coverage to be provided in two to three days (ESA, 2006)

Spatial

The data from the sensor is spatial resolution of 300 m (at nadir). This resolution is reduced to 1200 m by the onboard combination of four adjacent samples across-track over four successive lines.

Question 6

Is the sensor carried on an airborne or spaceborne platform? What is that platform – typically?

The sensor is spacebourne and was launched on the EVISAT platform on the 15th of June 2002 and is still operational today.

Question 7

Who developed/launched/manages the sensor?

The platform and sensor were developed and managed by the ESA (European Space Agency).

Question 8

Can data be purchased from service providers?

Yes - The data can be purchased from the ESA (European Space Agency)

Question 9

What products are available?

MERIS Level 3

MERIS Full-Resolution Geolocated and Calibrated TOA Radiance (MER_FR__1P)

MERIS Full Resolution Geophysical Product (MER_FR__2P)

MERIS Extracted Cloud Thickness and Water Vapour for Meteo Users (MER_LRC_2P)

MERIS Extracted Cloud Thickness and Water Vapour (MER_RRC_2P)

MERIS Global Vegetation Index (MGVI) including Atmospheric Corrections at Reduced Resolution (MER_RRV__2P)

MERIS Reduced Resolution Geolocated and Calibrated TOA Radiance (MER_RR__1P)

MERIS Reduced Resolution Geophysical Product (MER_RR__2P)

Question 10

At which main application areas is the sensor aimed?

MERIS was primarily designed for Ocean Colour Observations but has also been used for atmospheric and land surface related studies.
